In 1975 Friedrich Wolff ‘tamed’ the power of the sun and became the inventor of the modern tanning bed. His system of mounting a special UV tube in a tanning bed fitted with an ingenious reflector system meant he was able to generate light rays in a similar wavelength to those of the sun. For the first time it became possible to administer a dosed exposure evenly over the entire body. Used for medical purposes in the treatment of vitamin D deficiencies and the relief of skin irritations this new technology quickly spread around the world.
